Staff augmentation means adding developers to your team for a period, with you directing the work. They use your tools, join your stand-ups and follow your standards. A staffing partner finds them and handles the contract.
How it differs from outsourcing
With outsourcing you hand over a project and get a result. With staff augmentation you keep control and add capacity. You decide priorities, review code and own the outcome.
What to check before you start
- Onboarding. Can the person get repository, tickets and environments on day one?
- A named owner. Someone on your side should be responsible for their work and feedback.
- Time zone overlap. Agree the hours you need them online.
- Notice and replacement. Know how quickly each side can end the arrangement and what happens if it is not working.
- IP and security. Contracts and access should be clear before code is shared.
When it works best
When the roadmap is clear and the team has the process to absorb new people. It works badly when there is no onboarding and no one has time to review.
